The Best Places for “Leaf Peeping” in the Mount Washington Valley

1. Kancamagus Highway aka “The Kanc”
     No foliage guide to the Mount Washington Valley would be complete without the Kancamagus Highway. This spectacular scenic byway follows Route 112 between Conway and Lincoln, winding through the White Mountain National Forest.
     The drive is filled with opportunities to stop, stretch your legs, and soak in the scenery. The Swift River, rocky waterfalls, towering hardwood forests, and mountain overlooks create a constantly changing autumn landscape.

My favorite stops along the Kanc:

• Sabbaday Falls: A short walk leads to a beautiful waterfall surrounded by colorful forest.
• Rocky Gorge: A wonderful spot to admire the river rushing through smooth granite formations.
• Lower Falls: A popular roadside stop where the Swift River and autumn foliage make a memorable combination.
• CL Graham Wangan Overlook: A panoramic vista of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

     Allow plenty of time for this drive. The Kancamagus is not simply a road to travel; it’s an experience to savor.

2. Cathedral Ledge: Sweeping Views Across the Valley
      If you want a breathtaking view without committing to a long hike, head to North Conway. The summit overlook offers magnificent views across the Saco River Valley toward Bartlett and the surrounding mountains.
     You can drive up Cathedral Ledge Road, which is off of West Side Road, and take a short walk to the viewpoint. For those who enjoy hiking, the trails around the ledge and nearby Echo Lake offer additional ways to experience the autumn landscape.   

     This is one of those places where the view changes with every season, but fall adds an extraordinary richness to the scene.

3. Jackson Village: Storybook Charm and Autumn Color
     There’s something especially lovely about Jackson, NH in the fall. The historic covered bridge, charming village, church steeple, and winding roads create a quintessential New England setting.
     Take a leisurely drive around the village loop, cross the famous Honeymoon Bridge, and stop to admire the Ellis River. Drive a short distance up Carter Notch Road to Jackson Falls, another lovely spot for a short walk and a few photographs.
     For a quieter autumn outing, explore the roads beyond the village. You’ll find farm fields, stone walls, forested hills, and those wonderful little views that make you want to pull over just to take a picture.

4. Crawford Notch: Dramatic Mountain Scenery
     For dramatic mountain scenery, Crawford Notch in Hart's Location is hard to beat. Route 302 winds through a spectacular mountain pass surrounded by steep slopes, rocky cliffs, and brilliant autumn forests.
     The area offers plenty of places to stop and explore, including viewpoints, picnic areas, and hiking trails. The contrast between the rugged granite landscape and the colorful trees is especially striking in October. 
     If you enjoy photography, Crawford Notch provides endless compositions, from sweeping mountain vistas to intimate scenes of streams and foliage. 

5. Black Cap Mountain: A View Worth the Climb
     For those who like to earn their views, Black Cap Mountain in North Conway is a wonderful choice. Park at the crest of Hurricane Mountain Road. The trail climbs through the Green Hills Preserve to open granite ledges with panoramic views of North Conway, the Saco Valley, and the White Mountains.
     The hike is relatively short but includes a steady climb. Once you reach the summit, the expansive view makes the effort worthwhile.
     I especially love the idea of an early morning hike here, when the autumn light is soft and the valley below is beginning to wake up.

6. West Side Road: A More Relaxed Way to Enjoy the Colors
     Not every foliage adventure needs to involve a major attraction or a strenuous hike. West Side Road, which runs along the western side of the Valley, is a good choice for a more relaxed drive.
     The road passes through a beautiful mix of open farmland, wooded stretches, and views toward the Moat Mountains and Cathedral Ledge. It’s a wonderful alternative to the busier Route 16 corridor, particularly if you enjoy discovering the quieter side of the Valley.
     Bring your camera, take your time, and enjoy the scenery. Sometimes the most memorable autumn moments happen when you’re not in a hurry.

7. Eaton and Crystal Lake: A Classic New England Landscape
     For a peaceful and picturesque autumn outing, take a drive down route 153S from Conway toward Crystal Lake in Eaton.
     The lake, surrounding hills, and historic New England church create a beautiful composition, especially when the foliage is reflected in the water. It’s a lovely place to slow down and appreciate the quieter beauty of the region.
     Continue exploring the surrounding country roads toward Snowville NH and Fryeburg ME for a scenic drive through rural New Hampshire and western Maine.

8. Bear Notch Road: A Scenic Route Through the Forest
     Bear Notch Road is a seasonal scenic route connecting Bartlett with the Kancamagus Highway. It winds through the White Mountain National Forest and offers a peaceful alternative to some of the more heavily traveled roads.
     The drive is especially beautiful in fall, with forested hillsides, mountain views, and occasional roadside pull-offs where you can stop to enjoy the scenery.
     It’s the kind of road that reminds you why so many of us love living in the Mount Washington Valley: natural beauty is never far away.

9. Evans Notch
     Leaf peeping in Evans Notch is one of the White Mountains’ most magical autumn experiences. Just a short drive from Mount Washington Valley, this scenic corridor winds through a landscape of brilliant reds, oranges, and golds, with rugged mountain peaks, quiet ponds, and the meandering Cold River providing a stunning backdrop. Take a leisurely drive along Route 113N, stop at one of the many roadside pull-offs, or explore the Bald Face hiking trail to Emerald Pool for an up-close view of the fall foliage. Less crowded than some of the region’s more famous scenic routes, Evans Notch offers a peaceful, picture-perfect way to savor the beauty of New Hampshire in autumn.

When Is the Best Time to See Fall Foliage?
     One of the great things about the Mount Washington Valley is that foliage season unfolds across different elevations. Higher elevations and northern areas often begin changing first, followed by the lower valleys.
     In general, late September through mid-October is a good period to plan a foliage trip, with the first two weeks of October often offering vibrant color in the White Mountains. The exact timing varies each year, so it’s wise to check the

     And perhaps that’s what I love most about living here. The foliage is spectacular, of course, but it’s the everyday experience of being surrounded by mountains, rivers, forests, and small-town charm that makes this place feel like home.
