What It’s Really Like to Live on the New Hampshire Seacoast

Yvonne Marston Listing Specialist, Buyer Advisory and Area Expert - Seacoast of New Hampshire
What It’s Really Like to Live on the New Hampshire Seacoast
If you’re considering a move to the Seacoast of New Hampshire, there’s what you see online—and then there’s what it actually feels like to live here.
I’ve raised my family here. I’ve built my business here. And I’ve watched this community evolve while still holding onto what makes it so special.
Across Rye, Portsmouth, and the surrounding Seacoast towns, life has a rhythm that’s hard to fully capture until you experience it for yourself.
Here’s what I can share.
A Strong Sense of Community—Without Being Insular
The Seacoast has that rare balance.
It feels like a small, connected community, where you’ll run into familiar faces—at the market, at the beach, at a local event.
But it’s not closed off.
There’s an ease here. A welcoming energy. You don’t have to be “from here” to feel at home.
And one of my favorite parts?
You never quite know who you’ll be sitting next to—whether it’s a professional athlete, a business leader, or someone simply enjoying the same quiet lifestyle. It’s understated. Low key. And that’s exactly the appeal.
Education That Gives You Options
This was a big part of why we chose to raise our family here.
The Seacoast offers exceptional educational opportunities, both public and private.
Our daughter went through Portsmouth High School, which is known for its strong academics, high-level athletic programs, and well-rounded student experience.
Our son attended Phillips Academy Andover, one of the top private schools in the country (sorry Exeter), recognized for its rigorous academics as well as its top-tier arts and athletic offerings.
That range of options—combined with a community that truly values education, the arts, and athletics—creates a supportive and enriching environment for families.
A Lifestyle That Feels Balanced and Intentional
What I’ve always appreciated about living here is the balance.
You have:
- Beautiful beaches and shoreline
- Golf—both private and public courses
- Boating, walking trails, and year-round outdoor activity
- A growing food scene and incredible local restaurants
And at the same time:
- A pace that feels manageable
- Space to breathe
- A lifestyle that feels intentional, not rushed
It’s not about doing more—it’s about living better.
Culture, Art, and a Sense of Place
For a coastal community, the Seacoast has a surprising depth of culture.
From galleries and local art to music, events, and museums, there’s always something happening—without it ever feeling overwhelming.
Portsmouth in particular brings a vibrant energy, with its historic downtown, waterfront, and walkable streets.
It’s charming when you want it to be.
And quietly sophisticated when you need it to be.
Faith and Community Connection
For many families, having options for faith and community is important—and the Seacoast offers that.
There are a variety of churches and congregations across the area, making it easy to find a place that aligns with your values and creates a sense of connection.
For us, that was an important part of raising our children here.
Close to Everything—But Feels Like a World Away
One of the most unique advantages of the Seacoast is location.
You’re:
- About an hour from Boston
- Within reach of New York City
- Close to Montreal for a weekend getaway
- Just a short drive to the Lakes Region and White Mountains
- And with Maine quite literally across the river from Portsmouth—making it easy to enjoy everything from Kittery to the southern Maine beaches, and access to some of the best skiing in the Northeast, all within a few hours
So while day-to-day life feels grounded and local…
You’re never far from something more.
A Place That Grows With You
What I’ve found over the years is that the Seacoast meets you wherever you are in life.
- It’s a wonderful place to raise a family
- It offers a refined, yet relaxed lifestyle for professionals
- And it’s equally appealing for those looking for a second home or a long-term retreat
There’s a flexibility here that’s rare.
My Take
Living on the New Hampshire Seacoast isn’t about flash.
It’s about quality of life.
It’s about:
- Connection
- Balance
- Access to nature
- And a community that feels both grounded and evolving
It’s understated in the best possible way.
And for many of the buyers I work with—once they experience it, it just feels right.
Final Thought
If you’re exploring a move to the Seacoast, my best advice is simple:
Come spend some time here.
Walk the beaches. Sit in town. Talk to people.
Because what defines this place isn’t just what you see—
It’s how it feels.
